Banging is water hammer: condensate trapped in a main or radiator getting struck by fast-moving steam, loudest on cold-start cycles overnight. The fix is restoring pitch so water drains back to the boiler, and it is a repair, not a personality trait of steam heat.
Spitting vents usually mean wet steam from a boiler that needs skimming, an overfilled water line, or a radiator tilted away from its supply valve so condensate pools against the vent. All three are correctable in a normal service visit.
One-pipe systems use a single line for both steam and returning condensate, with air vents on each radiator doing the breathing. Two-pipe systems separate supply and return and rely on steam traps instead of radiator vents. They fail differently, which is why identifying yours is the first step of any diagnosis.
Not inherently. An untuned steam system wastes fuel through poor venting, excess pressure and bare pipes, but a balanced one runs at surprisingly low pressure and delivers even, comfortable heat. Tuning costs far less than converting, so it is the rational first step.
Usually air is not escaping fast enough: a clogged radiator vent on one-pipe systems, a failed trap on two-pipe, or undersized main venting leaving the far runs last in line. A closed or half-closed supply valve is the other frequent finding.
