The rule works because age and repair cost each predict what comes next. Take a 6-year-old gas furnace with a failed inducer motor quoted at $600: six times 600 is 3,600, comfortably under the line, and the furnace has a decade of service left to justify the fix. Now take a 24-year-old cast-iron boiler needing a $500 circulator: twenty-four times 500 is 12,000. The pump is fixable, but at that age the expansion tank, zone valves and burner controls are all original too, and each is a candidate for next winter's call. The rule is not punishing the boiler for one bad pump — it is pricing in the parade behind it.
Borderline scores deserve judgment. A 14-year-old furnace with a $350 ignition repair scores 4,900; we would fix that without hesitation, because a passing score plus a cheap repair beats replacement economics. The rule draws the line; a technician standing in front of the equipment tells you which side of it your system genuinely sits on.
A furnace from the mid-2000s typically converts about 80 percent of its fuel into heat; a new condensing model reaches 95–96 percent AFUE. On a Long Island gas bill, moving from 80 to 96 percent trims roughly one heating dollar in six, and the gap widens for oil equipment slipping below its rated efficiency with age. Fuel savings alone rarely justify scrapping a working system — the payback on a $7,000 furnace is measured in many years, not a few. The savings matter when a major repair has already forced the decision: at that moment, the replacement quote is competing against a repair bill plus decades-old efficiency, and the math tilts. Repair wins when the system is under 15, the fix is a single identifiable part, and the score stays under $5,000 — which describes most of the calls we take. Replacement wins when the score clears the threshold, when a heat exchanger or boiler section has failed, when this is the second significant repair in two seasons, or when the equipment can no longer heat the house evenly no matter what is replaced.
